Catch and effort data

Fine-scale catch and effort data (C1 trawl fisheries)

Fine-scale catch and effort data must be reported in all fisheries, and must be submitted to the Secretariat by email (data@ccamlr.org) before the end of the month following the month of data collection (Conservation Measure 23-04). These data are reported by Flag States on a haul-by-haul basis, and the data from trawl fisheries are referred to as 'C1 data'. The C1 data form must be used by vessels operating in trawl fisheries, or vessels conducting trawl fishing for research purposes in accordance with Conservation Measure 24-01 or Conservation Measure 21-02.

Fine-scale catch and effort data must be reported in all fisheries, and must be submitted to the Secretariat by email (data@ccamlr.org) before the end of the month following the month of data collection (Conservation Measure 23-04). These data are reported by Flag States on a haul-by-haul basis, and the data from longline fisheries are referred to as 'C2 data'. The C2 data form must be used by vessels operating in longline fisheries, or vessels conducting longline fishing for research purposes in accordance with Conservation Measure 24-01 or Conservation Measure 21-02.

Fine-scale catch, effort and biological data (C4 trawl surveys)

Fine-scale catch, effort and biological data from trawl surveys should be submitted to the Secretariat by email (data@ccamlr.org) on completion of each survey (Conservation Measure 24-01). These data are reported on a haul-by-haul basis and are referred to as 'C4 data'. The data form includes a user guide and further information is available from the Secretariat.

Observer

Longline fisheries data and cruise report forms

Logbook data are collected by scientific observers participating in the CCAMLR Scheme of International Scientific Observation (SISO) on board fishing vessels. The logbook for longline fisheries is used for recording information on gear type, vessel activity, incidental mortality of marine mammals and sea birds, by-catch, gear loss, biological information, processing methods and conversion factors, and any sightings of unknown vessels and gear.

SISO observers are also required to complete a cruise report for their trip, detailing inter alia the type of scientific observations undertaken, gear details, marine mammal and seabird interactions, and waste disposal practices.

The current logbook form, instructions for its completion, the longline cruise report, and the accompanying finfish fisheries observer manual are available below. The logbook and cruise report must be submitted to the Secretariat (observer.scheme@ccamlr.org) no later than one month after the observer returns to their home port.

In order to assist CCAMLR Members and their observers in planning observation programs and recording data, the CCAMLR Secretariat, in consultation with the Scientific Committee and its working groups, have revised the Scientific Observers Manual (2011). The Scientific Observers Manual for Finfish Fisheries contains guidance on standard tasks and requirements for observers as well as supplementary information to aid data collection requirements for toothfish (Dissostichus spp.) and mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari) fisheries.

Krill trawl fisheries data and cruise report forms

Logbook data are collected by scientific observers participating in the CCAMLR Scheme of International Scientific Observation (SISO) on board fishing vessels. The logbook for krill trawl fisheries is used for recording information on gear type, vessel activity, incidental mortality of marine mammals and sea birds, by-catch, gear loss, biological information, processing methods and conversion factors, and any sightings of unknown vessels and gear.

SISO observers are also required to complete a cruise report for their trip, detailing inter alia the type of scientific observations undertaken, gear details, marine mammal and seabird interactions, and waste disposal practices. Observers should complete all of the parts of the report that are relevant to the fishery in which the vessel is engaged.

The current logbook form, instructions for its completion, the trawl cruise report, and the accompanying krill observer manual are available below. The logbook and cruise report must be submitted to the Secretariat (observer.scheme@ccamlr.org) no later than one month after the observer returns to their home port.

Data Tools

Nautical twilight calculator

Nautical twilight is defined as the time in the morning and evening when the centre of the Sun is 12° below the horizon. At high latitudes, the Sun will not be lower than 12° below the horizon for a period in summer, and will not rise above 12° below the horizon for a period in winter.

This calculator provides the times of nautical twilight at a user-defined position, for today and at fortnightly intervals during a selected calendar year. The times of sunrise and sunset are included, and all times are adjusted to reflect the UTC offset of the user's clock.

The calculator is intended for use with CCAMLR's Conservation Measure 25-02 (Minimisation of the incidental mortality of seabirds in the course of longline fishing).

Tag overlap statistic calculator

The tag overlap statistic calculator is provided to assist with achieving an appropriate tag overlap match. The calculator also provides an indicative tagging rate at subarea scale only, and users should refer to the appropriate conservation measure to ensure they are meeting the correct tagging rate requirements.

Acoustic Data

Acoustic data collected by fishing vessels

The Scientific Committee encourages fishing vessels to collect acoustic data as frequently as possible along nearby CCAMLR transects while conducting fishing operations. For this purpose, WG-ASAM created an instruction manual for the collection of acoustic data by fishing vessels (WG-ASAM-2023, Appendix D).

In addition, WG-ASAM created specific instructions for:

  1. Echosounder Calibration (WG-ASAM-2024, Appendix D)
  2. Trawl Sampling (WG-ASAM-2024, Appendix E)
  3. CTD Sampling (WG-ASAM-2024, Appendix F)

Data Submission:

Vessels can document their acoustic data sampling activities using the proposed Acoustic Metadata Submission Form and use it to report the data the Secretariat at data@ccamlr.org. Raw acoustic data can be submitted to the Secretariat through the acoustic submission portal at https://ccamlr.portal.massive.io/. If the amount of data intended to be submitted exceed 1 TB, please contact the Secretariat to discuss submission using a physical hard drive.

For further details regarding the collection or submission of acoustic data, please contact your Scientific Committee Representative or the Secretariat (ccamlr@ccamlr.org).
