The Scientific Committee
The Scientific Committee uses the best available science to provide advice to the Commission. In turn, the Commission is required by the Convention to take full account of the recommendations and advice of the Scientific Committee in making its decisions. The Scientific Committee meets annually immediately prior to the Commission meeting.
To develop its advice, the Scientific Committee uses research from national programs presented by CCAMLR Members as well as results from several CCAMLR programs designed to collect the data required for the effective management of Antarctic marine living resources. The Scientific Committee’s work is guided by its strategic workplan.
The Scientific Committee has several monitoring programs in place:
- Monitoring and data collection of fisheries operations
- Fish tagging program
- Scientific observers on fishing vessels (Scheme of International Scientific Observation)
- CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP)
- Marine debris monitoring
The Scientific Committee has established a number of working groups that meet during the year and assist in formulating scientific advice on key subject areas.
The current working groups are:
- Working Group on Ecosystem Monitoring and Management (WG-EMM)
- Working Group on Fish Stock Assessment (WG-FSA)
- Working Group on Statistics, Assessments and Modelling (WG-SAM)
- Working Group on Incidental Mortality Associated with Fishing (WG-IMAF)
- Working Group on Acoustics, Survey and Analysis Methods (WG-ASAM)
